About the Park
Discover Bandhavgarh
In the heart of Madhya Pradesh’s Vindhya highlands, Bandhavgarh National Park stands as the crown jewel of India’s tiger country — a 1,536-square-kilometre wilderness renowned for possessing one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers on the planet. Sal forests draped in morning mist, bamboo thickets alive with alarm calls, and meadows washed golden at sunset create a setting of almost mythical beauty, dominated by the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort and its towering sandstone cliffs.
This is the land of legends. Bandhavgarh was the ancestral home of Mohan, the white tiger progenitor, and generations of celebrated tigresses have raised their cubs along the Charanganga river valley. Today, the park’s tigers are remarkably visible — often encountered on jeep tracks, at waterholes, or padding through open grassland in full view. Leopards inhabit the higher ridges, sloth bears forage in rocky outcrops, and the park supports thriving populations of gaur, chital, sambar, and over 250 bird species. For the serious wildlife traveller, Bandhavgarh is not optional — it is essential.
Popular Safari Zones & Highlights
- Tala Zone — The park’s premier circuit and highest tiger-density area; iconic meadows, fort views, and the legendary Siddhbaba region.
- Magadhi Zone — Open grassland and waterhole country with exceptional tiger and cub sightings; a photographer’s paradise.
- Khitauli Zone — Diverse woodland and scrub favoured by leopards, wild dogs, and sloth bears; quieter and richly rewarding.
- Bandhavgarh Fort — A 2,000-year-old hilltop citadel accessible on select days, offering panoramic views over tiger territory.
- Shesh Shaiya (Vishnu Idol) — A remarkable 35-foot reclining Vishnu statue at the fort base, carved from a single rock and surrounded by perennial springs.
- Buffer Zone Safaris — Extended circuits in Dhamokhar and Panpatha for travellers seeking solitude and off-the-beaten-track encounters.
Best Time to Visit
October to June defines the safari calendar. November to February delivers cool, mist-laden mornings and comfortable full-day itineraries. March to May is the undisputed peak for tiger sightings — as water sources dwindle, predators gather at the Charanganga and park waterholes in spectacular fashion. The reserve closes during monsoon (July to mid-October).
